Design the perfect Sauna

Sauna Designer

Plan your sauna's dimensions, timber species, bench layout and cladding here. This tool gives you an accurate materials estimate as an early-stage design aid, before your Sauna Drawings and Materials List are generated below.

1. Choose Your Timber Species

Species advice

ThermoAspen is thermally modified aspen: heat-treated to remove resin and reduce moisture movement, so it stays cool to the touch, resists warping in the heat cycle, and will not leach sap onto skin or towels.

ThermoAlder, Aspen, Alder and Dark ThermoAspen are shown for reference. They will be enabled here as soon as they are in stock. For now, all calculations use ThermoAspen pricing and availability.

2. Choose Your Bench Tier Layout

Why bench tier comes first

Bench tier sets your minimum width and ceiling height, so choosing it first stops you designing a room that does not fit the bench system you want.

2 tier: 1900–2300 mm width, 2100–2200 mm ceiling. 3 tier: 2300–2600 mm width, 2300–2500 mm ceiling. We recommend 3 tier where space allows because it gives better access to the upper heat zone and a more authentic löyly experience.

3. Sauna Internal Dimensions

Length advice

Bench length sets sauna length. 1600 mm is the minimum for 2 people; 1800 mm is recommended and comfortably seats 4 or allows one person to lie down.

Prefabricated ThermoAspen benches are stocked for 1800, 2100 and 2400 mm lengths. Outside that range, site-built bench materials are still calculated below, but a prefabricated bench becomes a custom order.

Width advice

Minimum width depends on bench tier selected.

Height advice

Minimum height depends on bench tier selected.

As a rough guide, heater output should be around 1 kW per m³ of internal volume for a well-insulated cabin, rising for glazed doors or exposed walls. Your Materials List can confirm exact heater sizing.

4. Door and Glazed Areas

Openings advice

Door and window areas are deducted from the cladding count, so wider or taller openings mean fewer wall boards, but more heat loss to make up with heater output.

Full-glass doors look striking but lose heat fast; a timber door with a smaller glazed panel holds heat better and needs a smaller heater. Set both window fields to 0 mm if you do not want a window.

Door and window position on the wall is chosen after this step, in the Sauna Drawings section below.

5. Wall Cladding

Cladding advice

Effective coverage is roughly 10 mm less than the nominal board width, since tongue-and-groove profiles overlap at each joint. Waste allowance is 10% for vertical cladding and 12% for horizontal cladding.

Vertical boards run floor to ceiling in one piece. Horizontal boards run wall to wall and stack row by row up the wall. Door and window openings need on-site trimming, so a slightly larger waste allowance is applied.

6. Ceiling Cladding

Ceiling advice

Effective coverage is 10 mm less than nominal width, the same as wall cladding, with a 10% waste allowance.

Parallel boards run in the same direction as the bench length. Perpendicular boards run across the sauna width.

7. Benches and Backrests

Bench advice

Recommended depths are 640 mm for the top bench, 540 mm for the foot bench and 390 mm for the step where fitted. The top bench sits in the hottest air and is the bench normally used for lying down.

SHP 28x90 boards form the bench slats with small gaps between them for airflow and drainage. SHP 28x140 boards form backrests and structural components.
